Congress to announce candidates for Delhi polls after Diwali

New Delhi: The Congress will announce its candidates for the Delhi Assembly election, to be held on December 4, only after Diwali. The decision was taken in a meeting of the party's Central Election Committee chaired by Congress President Sonia Gandhi with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh by her side. The names of odd 30 candidates were finalised by the Screening Committee for Delhi earlier.

In the CEC meeting on Monday, the party leadership examined the criteria and the process on which the screening committee finalised the tickets and also the basis on which the applications of some contenders were rejected, sources in the party said. The meeting was also attended by Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit, PCC chief JP Agrawal and AICC secretary general in-charge for Delhi Shakeel Ahmed. The meeting also discussed the names of candidates for Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan. Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi also held a review meeting of Maharashtra separately. The three-monthly review meeting was attended by Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan, PCC chief Manikrao Thakree, Mumbai Regional Congress Committee chief Janardan Chandulkar. AICC Secretary in-charge for the state Mohan Prakash was also present in the meeting in which Rahul reviewed the working the of state government.

PM Manmohan Singh, Narendra Modi to share stage in Gujarat

Ahmedabad, Oct 29 (IBNS): Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)'s prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi is all set to share the stage on Tuesday at the inauguration of a museum in Ahmedabad city dedicated to the iconic leader form Gujarat Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel.

Singh earlier in the evening was greeted with flowers after he landed in Ahmedabad by Modi, who aspires to replace him and become the next prime minister of the country.

"Prime Minister is greeted by the Governor and Chief Minister of Gujarat on his arrival at Ahmedabad airport," the Prime Minister's Office tweeted on Tuesday.

Singh will visit Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel National Memorial and unveil a statue and plaque at the renovated museum.

The PM has also paid tribute to Mahatma Gandhi at Sabarmati Ashram.

However, Commerce Minister Anand Sharma has written a letter and turned down the Gujarat chief minister's invite to attend another event in Gujarat on Thursday, where the foundation will be laid for a massive statue of Sardar Patel.

Sharma, in a caustic letter, accused Modi, of "misusing the name of Sardar for political propaganda."

"It is rather odd that you have attempted to brazenly usurp the rich legacy of Sardar Patel whose approach and beliefs militate against all that is personified by the Rashtriya Swayamsewak Sangh (RSS), whose nominee you are," Sharma said in his letter.
