Mahinda have to follow the CW values as the Chair: UNP

The United National Party (UNP) today said that the absence of the Indian Prime Minister in the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting was a loss.

“At least the Sri Lankan government should take necessary steps to strengthen the relationship with India when the Summit was concluded,”

He also said once the rajapaksa becomes the Chairperson of Commonwealth, he would have to implement Commonwealth values exactly without ignoring them unlike now.

“President Mahinda Rajapaksa will have to follow the 16 values of the Commonwealth as its Chairperson and shouldn’t act as Medamulana Mahinda anymore,” UNP General Secretary Tissa Attanayake told a news conference.

He said the procedure that the Sri Lankan government followed when impeaching former Chief Justice was against the Commonwealth values.

“Now the President will have to look into the issues again and take action as the Chairperson of the Commonwealth because the Commonwealth has declared that the impeachment was unlawful,” he said.

He said the President would also have to consider the establishment of independent commissions in Sri Lanka as suggested by the Commonwealth officials.

“Commonwealth Election Observers pointed out that there are faults in our election system and suggested the implementation of independent elections commission. The president will have to implement these suggestions after he takes over the chairmanship of the Commonwealth,” he said.
